On Sunday 29th March, a group of four SFT Instructors, six SFT students, and six SFT friends flocked to Scone for the Warbirds over Scone airshow. Thirteen of us flew up on Sunday morning in four different aircraft (JDC, NFR, VIQ, and JKE), whilst three drove and spent the weekend in the area.

The entire day was filled with action-packed displays, showcasing aircraft from the World War One era through to the present day. The show opened with a BANG! as Paul Bennet did a low pass in his Wolf Pitts Pro against a fiery pyrotechnics display, followed by a formation aerobatics display by the Sky Aces team.

We saw a firebombing demonstration from the Fireboss; handling displays from a multitude of World War 1 and 2 aircraft such as the Wirraway, Bristol fighter, Fokker triplane, and Kittyhawk; incredible aerobatics displays in the Tiger Moth, Edge 540, and Pilatus PC-9.

Our own Mark Kelly flying the Grumman Tracker both in a formation display with the Corsair and Avenger and on its own; and the highlight for most was seeing the incredible formation displays of the Spitfires and Mustangs accompanied by the sound of their Rolls Royce Merlin engines tearing through the sky.

There was plenty of action on the ground as well with static displays of different aircraft, cockpit layouts, and engines that had been pulled apart; different vendors such as Women in Aviation International, the Royal Flying Doctor’s Service, and the Rural Fire Service; plenty of merchants selling Aviation gear and merchandise; lots of food and drink options, including the Hunter Warbirds café which is open year-round; and even a kids area with rides, jumping castles, and face painting.

The show ended with an incredible 13-ship formation display showcasing Mustangs, Spitfires, Kittyhawks, Avenger, and Hudson – truly a great way to summarise everything we had seen throughout the show. After a full day of getting frazzled by the sun and watching aeroplanes, we then got to fly our respective aircraft home – arriving into Bankstown as the sun was setting, making for incredible views on the flight back.

Overall a great day was had by all that attended, and we can’t wait for SFT’s next adventure to Wings over Shellharbour on May 17th. If you would like to join us, please head to our events page and register your expression of interest!
